About Me. Why me?
Q: Who am I?
A: Hi, I'm Mike, a man who is (as of this writing) in my mid-40s, and admittedly a crazy dude. I got involved in the Lawrence music scene in the spring of 1979, at the age of 15. From my first listen to "Clash City Rockers" on KJHK, I was hooked and knew my life would be forever changed. Over the intervening 30 years, I've been more or less heavily involved in the "scene" in various capacities--I've been in bands, I've had radio shows, I published a zine (and written articles for several others) and invested a lot of time and money "supporting the scene." I've even organized/promoted a few shows. I don't get out much these days, but still enjoy my position as a "legacy" "geezer" "old fart." I can't wait 'til 2010, when I can claim to have seen Lawrence punk shows in five different decades!
Q: What's with the "Blur" thing?
A: That was the title of my self-published zine, BLUR which existed from April 1982 to November 1983 (with a final, one-off edition published in 1997.) My surname is difficult to pronounce/remember, so early on I went from being "Mike from Blur" to "Mike Blur" to just plain ole "Blur."
Q: What's with "Mental Excursions?"
A: It was the name of my one-man band in high school my junior year, a band that existed only on tapes long lost. It evolved into a pseudo-corporation overseeing my budding media empire in the early 80s. It just seems like a natural, very descriptive choice for this nascent website.
