THE LIST

of all documented Micronotz performances

This is a comprehensive but incomplete list of all performances by the Notz that have been documented--either by a flyer, ad in paper/magazine or live tape. There are 158 performances listed here covering a span of 5½ years, and two more at the end of 1986 and one in 1993. I estimate another 150 or so performances that escape documentation at this time. I will do my best to find those out. Thanks to Bill for his assistance on this timeline.
The Dean Era
The early gigs--a learning experience. For the first gig, the Notz did the three original songs they had written (one was "Blonde Haired Ghost", I remember) and "I Wanna Be Your Dog". This was also the first time I saw the Embarrassment.

This was the first tour of more than a few days for the Notz--three weeks thru the Midwest, right before John and Dean's senior year was about to start (David and Steve had graduated in May). John had written an extensive diary of the tour for my own BLUR zine #9. Read the diary here.

The Legendary 1985 "Skank Naked" Tour. Spring break of 1985, and three of the four Notz were KU students. The band and its manager bought a 10-pack of cassettes before the tour, so live tapes exist of almost every show on this tour.

The legendary 1985 "Tour that Devoured Itself". The "Beast that Devoured Itself" LP was released on June 1, a week into the tour...so they hit the road essentially without an album to support. All these dates were picked off of the books--showing income and expenses, but in most cases the name of the club was omitted. (Fascinating documents, nonetheless.)

Originally, they were scheduled to head out to California during this time, but plans didn't work out. This was the second leg of the "Tour that Devoured Itself".

There is some disagreement among the band members that all the previous dates in Florida actually occurred--but they did agree that Miami was the final show. With frustrations and internal dissension taking over, they pulled the plug and drove straight back to Lawrence in silence. They did keep the next date, however--which was supposed to be the midpoint of their tour and a precursor to their first-ever West Coast dates. The farthest west the Notz ever played was Denver.

March 22, 1986 Micronotz, Bum Kon, Duh-Ta-Duh-Ta-Duh at the Outhouse

There was some hints the Notz might get back together after this show--notably in a July 13 article in the Lawrence paper in which Jay was quoted as saying "the only way we'd do it is if we agree never to do it again". Well, I guess the next show was it. This was the final performance of all the members of the Mortal Micronotz together--John, David, Steve, Jay and Dean. Yes, Dean. It was mostly "Jay Notz", but Dean did four songs with the band at each performance. At the afternoon show, Jay and Dean sang "Gimme Some Skin" together!

December 31, 1986 The Embarrassment, Micronotz at Cogburn's (2PM and 7PM)

The Micronotz were just about to become another footnote in rock n roll history when on January 31, 1993, David Dale committed suicide. The next Saturday, Feb 6, there was a memorial show for him where Steve Buren, playing bass, joined John, Steve and Jay and did four Micronotz tunes.
